Omise Joins CODAS to Accelerate "Privacy-First AI" Across Asia's Payment Ecosystem

Bangkok, Thailand — 3 August 2026: Omise Co., Ltd. (Omise), a leading payment solutions provider in Asia, today announced it has joined the AI Data Sovereignty Co-creation Organization (CODAS), a Japan-based non-profit focused on developing privacy-first AI infrastructure for regulated industries. The announcement follows CODAS's official launch event, held on 31 July 2026 at SHIBUYA QWS in Tokyo, where the organization set out its mission to advance "Japan-originated, privacy-preserving AI" with founding members, partners, and academic collaborators. As a member, Omise will contribute its payments and fraud-detection expertise to CODAS's research and implementation work, helping shape a new generation of AI models that let financial institutions collaborate on data-sensitive challenges.

While AI adoption is increasing, Japan has been held back by a simple, well-founded worry: once sensitive data goes into an AI model, where does it end up, and who can see it? That concern is holding real businesses back from real gains. Surveys show most Japanese companies rank data leakage as their top AI risk, and individual use of generative AI in Japan still trails other major markets.

CODAS was founded on the belief that privacy and progress don't have to be traded off against each other. Built around the principles of data sovereignty and privacy by design, and operated as an open, non-profit organization, CODAS is working toward, in its own words, "a world where organizations can co-create safely without surrendering data sovereignty." In practice, that means organizations across finance, insurance, healthcare, and beyond can each choose exactly what they contribute, train shared AI models on a far richer pool of patterns than any single company could gather alone, and keep their own customer data fully under their own control throughout.

The result is AI that grows smarter collectively, recognizing patterns no single company could see in isolation, while every participant's data stays exactly where it already lives. For businesses, that means faster, safer AI adoption. For society, it means the benefits of AI without having to surrender privacy to get them.

Catching Fraud Without Sharing the Data

Omise is engaging with CODAS's financial-sector implementation track, contributing payments-industry context to use cases such as cross-institution fraud detection, where the core challenge is that bad actors move across services and providers, but any single company's data only shows a fragment of that behavior. CODAS's collaborative learning approach is designed to let participating companies contribute to a shared model of fraud patterns while keeping their own transaction data fully private and on their own infrastructure.

CODAS marked its public launch on 31 July 2026 with a hybrid event at SHIBUYA QWS in Shibuya, Tokyo, bringing together founding members, research partners, and companies from across finance, insurance, and technology to introduce its mission and roadmap.
